FAT FLUSHING IN THE FAST-FOOD LANE
As far as take-out meals are concerned, there are some okay meals that don’t exactly conform to the Fat Flushing principles but are acceptable in a pinch—once you’re on the Lifestyle Fat Flush eating phase, that is. Some examples are the grilled chicken sandwiches at Arby’s, Dairy Queen, Hardee’s, or Carl’s (9 g of fat, 28 g of protein, and 33 g of carbohydrate); the chicken fajita pita at Jack-in-the-Box (9 g of fat, 28 g of protein, and 31 g of carbohydrate); and the chili at Wendy’s (8 g of fat, 24 g of protein, and 29 g of carbohydrate). Of course, try your best to eat your fast-food sandwiches open face and avoid eating the bread and eat only half of the pita, even if you are in the Lifestyle phase. Both the bread and the pita are most likely made from white flour, and empty calorie eating is a Fat Flush no-no.
And, as mentioned previously, no matter what phase of the plan you are on, I would definitely look for places that feature rotisserie chicken or turkey, touted as a much healthier alternative to the fried version because the fat drips off when the meat is on a rotating spit. With a side salad and steamed vegetables plus lots of fresh lemon, you can’t beat it.
You also should be on the lookout for Rubios (www.rubios.com), a chain spreading all over the country, which is the home of the fish taco. The grilled fish is made from mahi mahi or red snapper and comes in a delightful yogurt-type sauce with fresh cabbage. Ask for a corn tortilla instead of the taco shell. In Lifestyle a corn tortilla counts as 1 friendly carb, but taco shells are loaded with trans fats. I usually order several fish tacos and remove the taco shells. Rubios also has lots of salsas and fresh lime for seasonings.
Most of the other fast-food items I have evaluated are way too high in saturated fats, which you want to keep in balance. Bacon, for example, and regular salad dressings are 75 percent fat; cheesecake is 70 percent fat. A taco salad (with the shell) is 60 percent fat, as are fried shrimp, fried chicken wings and thighs, a bacon cheeseburger, and an egg-and-meat croissant. Again, Boston Market and other establishments that feature rotisserie chicken and turkey are some of the better fast-food choices. Of course, you can always visit a Wendy’s and prepare a salad from the salad bar and/or order a grilled chicken sandwich or hamburger with lettuce, onions, and mustard. Just remember to remove the bun!
